Thievery Corporation’s Rob Garza comes to Vail

Daily staff report
VAIL CO, Colorado
Special to the DailyRob Garza of Thievery Corporation was supposed to perform at Samana Lounge in Vail this time last year but the show was canceled. He will DJ at the Bridge Street bar Friday night though, beginning at 11 p.m.

One of the most popular acts that has come to the Vail Valley in recent years is Thievery Corporation. Samana Lounge is proud to host the man behind the electronic side of Thievery, Rob Garza, in a solo show Friday night at Samana Lounge.

As one half of electronic music pioneers/producers Thievery Corporation, Garza has been at the forefront of music for more than 15 years, traveling the globe performing, remixing, DJing, recording and composing.

Garza was scheduled to perform a year ago at Samana but the show was cancelled.

“Unfortunately there was a conflict of interest last year because Thievery was playing Spring back to Vail and under his contract he was not allowed to play any other events in Vail,” said show promoter Ross Cohen. “This year there is no conflict of interest. The staff and I are super excited to have Rob come and play.”

Since Garza’s recent relocation to San Francisco, he has begun to re-explore his love for electronic music and beats, focusing on Nu-Disco, cosmic boogie and deep house while keeping very groove-oriented rhythms.

“My foundation is electronic music and I’m more excited now then ever about what is happening in that universe,” Garza said. “I feel like there is a flowering of ideas, styles and sub genres.”

And when asked how San Francisco has influenced this new direction:

“There’s so much going on right now in the Bay area, it’s hard to not feel a re- inspiration when it comes to art and creativity,” he said.

Recently Garza has been DJing and remixing, taking things to an even more spaced out and trippy level. In 2012 he performed for audiences everywhere from Hong Kong, Robot Heart at Burning Man, Shambhala and Bali . Recently he has remixed Tycho, Miguel Migs, Blondie and others.
