Tidbits: Halfpipe competition
While Shaun White is the favorite, one thing to watch out for in Saturday’s men’s Olympic halfpipe contest is a frontside 1260.
The trick has never been landed in competition finals, and reportedly, a few Europeans ” Italian Giacomo Kratter, Finnish phenom Antti Autti and Mathieu Crepel from France have been landing the trick in training.
American riders say the number of spins isn’t key in a successful pipe performance.
“It’s a great trick if people can land it smooth and clean, but you’ve got to have some style.
It’s not figure skating,” said Danny Kass.
“Screw that,” said Andy Finch about the frontside 12. “Just go big.”
The women, who compete on Monday, are pulling for their male counterparts to set an example Saturday.
“I’m excited to watch the guys kill it,” said Gretchen Bleiler. “I said to Danny, ‘You have to lead and we will follow.'”
