Tigiwon Road near Minturn to reopen Sunday

Daily staff report
Vail, CO Colorado

MINTURN, Colorado – On Sunday, the Tigiwon Road, providing access to the Tigiwon Lodge, Cross Creek trailhead, Half Moon trailhead, and the Holy Cross Wilderness Area on the Eagle/Holy Cross Ranger District, will reopen.

The road has been closed much of the summer for logging operations associated with removing dead and dying bark-beetle-infested trees.

“The project will help kick start the forest regeneration process in the wake of extensive pine beetle infestation while simultaneously supporting the struggling timber industry in western Colorado,” said District Ranger Dave Neely. “It’s important to understand that due to the extent of mortality in these lodgepole forests, much of the timber would have naturally fallen in the next several years, creating public safety and potential wildfire management issues. Folks will be initially surprised by the contrast, but give the land a few years, and the rebirth of those stands will be remarkable, with a diverse and resilient future forest as a result.”

The work will also improve habitat for deer, elk and other wildlife, Neely said.

Travelers on the Tigiwon Road should expect minor delays and short duration road closures as loggers finish up the project, Neely said. The road will remain open until snow closes the road for the winter.- Snowmobile use of the road will be allowed under the terms of the Forest’s Travel Management Plan.
