BEAVER CREEK – Visions stir the soul, fabled faces spring to life and mysteries unfold during Michael Cooper’s “Masked Marvels and Wondertales” Monday at the Vilar Center.Cooper’s talents run deep and his exquisite masks speak volumes about his passion for performing. Whether it’s a giant nose, a fish head, chicken beak, the sun and moon, a horse head, a baby face or stilts with toes, Cooper’s creations (some taking more than 300 hours to create) stir the imagination and tickle the soul. Combining mythical and autobiographical stories, his repertoire results in “moving sculpture” that has audiences in stitches.Cooper learned his craft from Paris master-mime Etienne Decroux, who taught him how to lean on air and his remarkable sense of storytelling is captivating. The pieces range from the madcap to the sublime and each piece has a story to tell. Whether it’s one of silliness or poignancy, creativity, compassion or self-worth, “Masked Marvels and Wondertales” is “timeless theatre for a restless world” and it will not disappoint, said Cooper. The program for for “Masked Marvels and Wondertales” is as follows:- “The Baby and the Old Man,” a magical meeting of the bookends of life.

– “Spare parts,” a surreal attempt at self-improvement.- “Animalia,” Chicken, monkey, dog, etc.- “Fish-or-man,” how do you think a fish would feel if he were the one winding the reel?- “Ride ’em cowboy,” a slow-motion rendition of Cooper’s dad riding his first wild horse

– “Public Transportation,” a chance for some of the children in the audience to join Cooper on the stage- “The north wind and the sun,” an original poetic rendition of Aesop’s classic tale- “The clumsy giant,” watch what happens when sweet melody transforms an awkward ogre into a graceful, long-limbed dancer.Tickets are available at the Vilar Center Box Office by calling 845-TIXS (8497) or visiting http://www.vilarcenter.org.
