Go bikes

Bicycles are our main source of summer tourism in the Vail Valley. Bicycling is what started the summers here, before golf. Bicycles have been here years before golf even started, and whoever is out there complaining about a bicycle in a tourism county, I feel that you should move to a city where they hate bicycles. Period. I think you need to go home and rethink what you’re doing in this town and try to locate a different area to live, because the bicycles will strive to continue the growth of this county. Most people that move into this county bring several bicycles with them, per person. I don’t know if you people understand this, but you’d better come to sense that we bicycle riders pay taxes as a U.S. citizen. When an illegal immigrant comes into this county to do your dirty work such as doing dishes, cleaning your home, mowing your lawn, paying them cash and cheating the IRS, that’s a crime in itself.

Follow the leader

Naturally, the common people don’t want war, but after all, it’s the leaders of the country that determine the policy, and it’s always a simple matter to drag people along, whether it’s a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of their leaders. This is easy. All you have to do is tell them they’re being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It worked the same in every country. Herman Doerring, Hitler’s Right Marshall at the Nuremburg Trials after World War II. And we call our President a leader.

Lake Guy

It’s Rod again. Just wanted to give you an update on the lake situation. Unfortunately we had a wind storm a few days ago that knocked down several trees back behind the lake over by the school, and also as you walk around the lake it knocked down branches and leaves, big, big branches, and they haven’t touched it. It’s been four or five days and the leaves and branches are still on the ground, and they’re actually choking the water as it goes downstream. They don’t seem to care about anything, so hopefully you’ll put this in the paper and they’ll keep up the work as far as cleaning up the lake.

Avon Rec

I want to say thanks to the staff at the Avon Recreation Center for making the first grade swim program a valuable experience. The kids at Avon Elementary had small group swim lessons at an affordable cost. The kids would like to thank Courtney, Adrianne, John, and McGuire for an awesome learning opportunity. Also, thanks goes to lifeguards Scott, Alex, Matt and Jamie for helping keep the kids safe. That’s all.

No bike paths

As a cyclist that rides the highways, I read something about using $2 to $3 million to build a bike path, and yet nobody wants a bike path that’s 8 feet wide. You guys should do something else with the $2 or $3 million dollars instead of building bicycle paths, maybe build a sidewalk, but don’t call it a bike path, because nobody wants them, and they’re unsafe for bicycle riders. If you put a dog on it, people on it, children on it, walkers on it, hikers on it, runners on it, all within 8 feet, and then you have some bicycle come launching through at 30 mph and just trying to score a few points per individual on that path. They don’t work and you’re wasting your time and money building bicycle paths.

Danger truck

I was the guy on the motorcycle at 4:30 p.m. going on to the on ramp onto I-70 and the big end loader was pulling up on the shoulder there. Bright sunlight, you could not see your tail lights, you could not see a signal, and regardless, I put my hand out and moved over the left lane and you moved over and damn near killed me. Do you realize that? Do you fricking realize that? What you did was illegal. You cannot drive a construction end loader onto open highway without a police escort around you. You oughta have your license taken away.

Free speech

Concerning the print about Dr. Bob Branden’s comments, in my opinion this is still a free country which enjoys freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Thank you for printing Dr. Branden’s comments. An earned Doctorate in New Testament is an esteemed credential. I would rather read the educated writings of Dr. Branden than read the discriminatory comments made by the person criticizing him in your newspaper’s policy, although that person also has the right to be heard.

Taxes forever

Beware of new taxes. They never go away and usually grow, especially with no real plan for their exact use and expenditure. Bill and Joe Grimm.

Fix the road!

As I sit here in my car, hydroplaning all the way to work, from Eagle-Vail to West Vail, I wonder when they are actually going to fix these grooves in the drainage on this section of road. I mean with all of the energy leasing the company is spending on our national monument to extract oils and gases and everything like that, I’m assuming our federal and state government have enough money to actually fix these roads at this time.

Editor’s note: The Colorado Dept. of Transportation has plans to revamp and repave the Dowd Junction section next summer.
