HL Tis the Season 1 KA 12-08-10

VAIL, Colorado – For the fifth time, Friends of the Dance and the Vilar Performing Arts Center have joined to produce ‘Tis the Season, a festive holiday collaboration featuring local performing artists. Performances will be held today and Sunday at 6:30 p.m. to benefit the Vilar Center’s community performance fund, which underwrites theater usage and production costs for approximately 10 local youth dance, music and theatrical performances each year.

‘Tis the Season will include four pieces by the Vail Youth Ballet Company. The ballet “Les Patineurs” will bring a smile to your face … perhaps memories from your younger years skating on a frozen pond oblivious to the winter winter. Guest artist, Ryan Seate, will join the Youth Ballet Company in this piece. Seate is currently a soloist with Boulder Ballet. The company, plus advanced tap dancers from Vail Valley Academy of Dance, will also dance a high-kicking Rockette’s number as well as two other ballets, “Winter” and a new contemporary piece, “After.”

The Vail Performing Arts Academy will perform song and dance numbers from the big band, swing era. Thirty-one young performers will pay tribute to the ballroom dancing of the 1940s and will sing the classic Fred Astaire number, “Steppin’ Out With My Baby.” In addition, an all-boys teen a cappella quartet will sing a Nigerian Christmas song. The quartet is trained and directed by Aaron Wacker from Battle Mountain High School.

‘Tis the Season will also include performances by local favorites Peter Vavra and Pat Hamilton, Beth Swearingen and Don Watson, the Fabulous Femmes (Swearingen, Kathy Morrow and Sally Peterson), the Dickens Carolers and Mountain Harmony.

Visit the Golden Eagle Inn Restaurant just steps from the Vilar Center for dinner before or after the show. The restaurant will contribute 10 percent of their dinner revenue from tonight and Sunday night to Friends of the Dance. To participate, present your ‘Tis the Season ticket or ticket stub. Friends of the Dance will also host a silent auction in the lobby of the Vilar Center featuring some wonderful items on which you can bid before the show, during intermission or after.

Friends of the Dance/Vail Youth Ballet Company is one of the groups that is able to use the Vilar Center because of its community performance fund.

“The arts reflect the health of a community,” said Anne Powell, artistic director of Vail Youth Ballet Company. “If you don’t have the arts available and children participating, then the appreciation and sharing of music, vocals or dance are lost. Reflecting on my group of dancers I am amazed at their dedication in terms of time necessary to perfect their work – from class work to rehearsals to summer study. All of this, of course, adds value to their lives and we, as teachers and audience participants, learn so much from them. The Performance Fund makes it possible for them to bring joy to an audience and we are so grateful for that opportunity.”

Tickets for ‘Tis the Season are $12 for children and $22 for adults and are available online at http://www.vilarpac.org, by calling 970-845-TIXS (8497) or in person at the box office in Beaver Creek.
