Town of Avon to open Mikaela Way Monday
AVON — The town will honor Olympic gold medalist Mikaela Shiffrin by officially opening Mikaela Way on Monday. Mikaela Way is a two-lane, meandering street connecting the Nottingham Park Lake Street entrance to Benchmark Road at the Avon Public Library. The quarter-mile Mikaela Way provides a vehicular corridor to the Avon Recreation Center and the town’s new pedestrian mall.
“Mikaela calls our close neighbor Eagle-Vail home and so it is special to have her in our midst as an athlete and resident throughout the year,” said Mayor Rich Carroll. “She is an exemplary role model for any citizen, but especially for our children and guests. No town or valley could be any more proud of Mikaela as she won the slalom gold in Sochi this winter and how she represented all of us with her great sense of humor, genuine performance of grit and ever-present grace as she navigated athletic stardom. Matching the records of other renowned skiers, and this past year’s world championship title in the slalom has been remarkable. We know there is much committed training yet for her and great races ahead, but the town of Avon finds her outstanding accomplishments deserving of a permanent place in our town at this time in her career. The street naming does just that.”
The Mikaela Way street naming is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Lake Street intersection. The public is invited to celebrate Shiffrin’s arrival via the Fire District’s vintage Gilman engine for the lively festivities.
