Eat for a good cause!Caught in a draftThank heaven thats over. The that in question is the National Football Leagues annual player draft. How in the name of Mel Kipers hair has it come to pass that what used to be a non-event has turned into a national obsession? Finding out how the team whose hats and T-shirts you own has restocked its player roster with amateur talent is one thing. Just knowing much less caring about the bench press numbers or 40-yard dash times of wide receivers from They Have a College? School of Podiatry and Hair Care Academy is just weird. This isnt following sports, this is following human-resources decisions. Were not sure why the NFL draft has become an event with wire-to-wire TV coverage (that may actually move to prime time next year), endless video clips of players best known by their mothers and enough blah-blah-blah analysis to make Bill OReilly look like hes taken a vow of silence. But here are a few guesses: Football fans need a way to avoid yardwork. For one weekend, at least, dyed-in-the-wool fanatics can put off gutter-cleaning, mulch-spreading or lawn aerating. If youve ever run a lawn aerator, you know its a muscle-straining activity best followed by multiple beers and enough ibuprofen to knock over a moose. The ability to put off aerating along could be responsible for as much as one-third of the drafts rating numbers. The draft is a good way to avoid weekend kid shuttling. Not that wed call these people bad parents or anything, but you can bet at least one dad has weaseled his way out of driving the minivan on a soccer Saturday with: But I really, really need to see if the Marmots are going to land a backup center today!Of course, that claim is just as likely to be followed by at least one night on the couch. If it wasnt for the draft, sports fans would have to watch baseball or ugh! the NBA playoffs. Face it, with the way the Rockies and Nuggets are playing right now, who wouldnt rather watch the draft than those teams, especially if the weather is as sorta-icky as it was Saturday. And it just wouldnt be right to spend time with family or friends. They cant love you the way giant and/or blindingly fast men younger and about to be richer than you can, can they?
