Going back to school can put a strain on a family’s budget, especially those families who are struggling financially. The Vail Valley Salvation Army and The Youth Foundation present the third annual Stuff for Students drive.Through Aug. 24, you can donate school supplies for local school-aged children. Drop-off boxes are at City Markets in Vail, Avon and Eagle; Vail Interfaith Chapel; Trinity Baptist Church; and First Lutheran in Gypsum. These supplies will be distributed by volunteers to a local child in need.Monetary donations also are being accepted. Checks can be written to The Vail Valley Salvation Army and mailed to The Vail Valley Salvation Army, P.O. Box 2183, Avon, CO 81620. Please note on the check that the gift is for school supplies.The following suplies are needed:colored pencils, highlighters, pencils, pens, paper, notebooks, erasers, glue, folders, crayons, backpacks, scissors, rulers – all the things kids need to learn.For more information, call The Vail Valley Salvation Army at 926-3704.

The granddaddy of all garage sales, the Eagle Valley Community Fund Auction and Rummage Sale, starts bright and early the morning of Aug. 18 at Maloit Park in Minturn.Sale-goers – and there are thousands of them – can shop in 14 rooms filled to the brim with linens, books, shoes, toys, small appliances, housewares, home decorating, clothing for the entire family, jeans, ski wear, skis and snowboards and a room filled with new items from local businesses. Doors open at 6:45 a.m. Aug. 18 at Maloit Park, with the auction set to begin at 8:45 a.m. There is also a silent auction and bake sale the first day, with lunch served by the Eagle County Charter Academy.The sale items include a Subaru, many conference chairs, loads of brand-new commercial shelving perfect for a new business owner, dozens of comforters from the Cascade Resort, piles of brand-new, washable suede leather jeans and a huge array of children’s skis and snowboards.The hours Aug. 19 are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call 926-0577 or 827-9426.—————————————————————————————————————We want to hear from you.
