Town Talk for Oct. 31, 2002

Some well-meaning humanoid sent this stuff, and a bunch more like it, to Town Talk Towers. We hope you see yourself in it, and that you’re able to chuckle a little bit.If not, you’re humor impaired. We suggest you take a strong laxative, unclench, go to a neutral corner and stay there until you grow a sense of humor. We have a bunch of these things, and you’re going to see them until next Tuesday, when the Silly Season officially ends.n We contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like aman standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle.Winston Churchilln A government which robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul.George Bernard Shawn A liberal is someone who feels a great debt to his fellow man, which debt he proposes to pay off with your money.G. Gordon Liddyn Democracy must be something more than two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner.James Bovard, Civil Libertarian (1994)n Foreign aid might be defined as a transfer from poor people in rich countries to rich people in poor countries.Douglas Casey, classmate of W.J. Clinton at Georgetown U. (1992)n Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys.P.J. O’Rourke, Civil LibertarianDog days end at GashouseWe just wanted to express our appreciation to The GASHOUSE & their patient and dog-loving staff, Bob Angel (Avon Town Council Candidate), Steve’s Dog & Cat Repair, Wags & Whiskers Pet Shop, Markos, Antiques & Interiors, Budges and all the other sponsors and schwag givers for the weekly Doggy Happy Hour on Tuesday evenings. We wish it wasn’t over for the season, but ended with a GREAT Halloween costume party on Tuesday. What a great atmosphere for the socializing of all ages, sizes and breeds of dogs (and their owners!). We can’t wait until next spring for Doggy Happy Hour at The Gashouse. Thanks! From Gerry, Brian and Hannah Banana Bortz.Laurie’s Our HeroMary Boyd and a cast of several called to heap praise upon Laurie Asmussen for putting together last weekend’s Halloween bash in Eagle. We know it was cool, because The Titans of Town Talk went through the haunted house and about jumped out of their collective skin when some costumed ghoul grabbed us by the ankle in the pitch black. Thanks Paul and ToddA bunch of Eagle Cub Scouts found their way to Town Talk Towers to thank Paul Ramsey for taking on the mantle of Cub Scout master for Eagle all these years. They also pledge their unwavering support to Todd Purse, who’ll be the new Scout master.Fall Fun Night is todayIf you’re not all that interested in Thursday’s Halloween Trick or Treat deal, check out Fall Fun Night in Avon’s Nottingham Park. It starts at 4 p.m. and goes until the fun runs out. The event is completely volunteer driven and financially supported by the Christian churches in the Vail Valley, The Town of Avon and local businesses. If your business, family or church is interested in making a tax-deductible cash or goods contribution, or if you have general questions, call Nedra Bonta at Calvary Chapel Vail Valley at 748-1103.
