Tom Winters honored

Former Vail Daily journalist and part-time Vail resident Tom Winter has been honored by the Society of Professional Journalists with a Top of the Rockies award for General Sports Reporting. Winter’s story “Gonzo Swimming”, published by the Boulder Weekly, took first place in the category. Winter, who oversees the Americas for the Freeride World Tour, an elite big-mountain ski and snowboard event company based in Verbier, Switzerland, regularly freelances for The Weekly as well as other ski and action sports publications such as Skiing Magazine, SBC Skier, the Skier’s Journal and national and international titles. “The Vail Daily was instrumental in launching my career,” said Winter. “I look back on that experience and the quality of the work being done there, and it’s no surprise that many of my peers who also were there during that period have gone on to award-winning careers. It was an amazing place to work and learn.” Winter is also a four-time Hirsch Award winner for excellence in snowsports photography and an athlete on Eider’s elite international freeride team.
