Tracker: Vail Valley getting affordable housing store?
Vail, CO Colorado
Who they talked to: Don Cohen of the Eagle County Economic Council and Housing Director Alex Potente
What they discussed: The Economic Council is partnering with the county and local businesses to open the Home Source, a one-stop affordable housing store. The store would have comprehensive listings for all the deed-restricted properties in the county, offer down payment assistance programs and pre-qualification services.
Cohen and the commissioners discussed the formation of a nonprofit board to run the home store, funding sources, and a possible location in Edwards.
“We’re making a lot of progress with this. There is complete alignment with the commissioners,” Cohen said.
Commissioners wanted to know more about the financial details, but said they had heard positive feedback from community members about the home store idea.
What’s next: Cohen estimates all the funding will be in place by the end of April, and the store is set to open this summer.
The vote: All commissioners in favor
What that means: Many of the county’s zoning maps were drawn on vellum paper, a thin paper also used for cards and scrap booking. The maps have been in use since 1974, and in the past when zone changes occurred, staff had to erase the lines and redraw them by hand, often with the help of magnifying glasses, said Communications Director Justin Finestone.
The maps will now be replaced with electronic geographic information system maps.
