Daily Staff Report
Vail CO, Colorado

MINTURN – Snow is melting fast in the High Country with only patches remaining on the shady, north-facing slopes above 11,000 feet. The Eagle/Holy Cross Ranger District wilderness and trails crews have been working hard to clear and maintain trails for the millions of visitors on the White River National Forest, but visitors to the area should be aware of the following:

– Two Elk Bridge Closure: The second bridge on the trail, located 3/4-mile from the Minturn trailhead, is impassable due to significant damage from a large rock that fell and hit the bridge. Two Elk Creek is difficult to cross during high water, and is not recommended that visitors attempt to do so. Bridge replacement is planned for the summer of 2008.

– The Trail Action Group (TAG) will be performing volunteer trail work on the Cougar Ridge Trail on Saturday, July 7, 2007, and is looking for volunteers to help. For information, contact Dawes Wilson of TAG at (970) 476-1914.

– The following trails are now open after being closed seasonally for wildlife and resource protection:

” Two Elk Trail (#2005), within the Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin of the Vail Resort;

” Eastern Hillside (#2347), Paulie’s Plunge (#2349), and Paulie’s Sister (#2350), accessed from Beaver Creek;

” Whiskey Creek (# 2348), accessed from Minturn and Eagle/Vail.

For more information, contact Trail Crew Leader Mike Bartholow at (970) 827-5181.
