Trash ‘n Splash contest at Gypsum pool Friday night

Vail, CO Colorado

GYPSUM, Colorado –Loads of trash are headed for the bottom of the Gypsum Rec Center swimming pool Friday night as part of the town’s first Earth Day celebration.

The Trash ‘n Splash event begins at 5:30 p.m. It won’t just feature any form of trash, though – contestants are building boats from found objects and scrap materials and they’ll see how many people each boat can carry before it sinks.

“People will get wet and they have to wear clothes, not swim suits,” said Dawn Ritts, one of the event’s organizers. She anticipates six or eight boats will be entered in the competition. Prizes will be awarded for “People’s Choice,” “Most Creative Use of Junk” and for the boat that holds the most weight.

Ritts added that the pool will be drained and cleaned afterwards, though she didn’t think the water would get too dirty from the trash boats. “They’ll be hosed off before they go in the pool,” she said.

The boat contest begins at 7 p.m.

In addition to the trash boats, there will be games, activities and information booths put on by sponsors such as High Country Hydroponics Garden Center and Architectural Engineering Consultants. Gypsum Animal Hospital, Gypsum Rec and the town of Gypsum are also sponsoring the Trash ‘n Splash Earth Day Celebration.

“We’re excited about it because Gypsum hasn’t had an Earth Day event before,” Ritts said.
