Treasures for the home
Local Sarah Vaughan, in the midst of her interior design career 15 years ago, was looking for the perfect bed frame. She needed something unique with western appeal. But like many valley shoppers even today, Vaughan was at a loss with nowhere to buy those finishing touches for the home. Vaughan saw the need for pieces that both designers and homeowners could use to spruce up a room, like handcrafted chandeliers, and the demand followed suite.
So she opened up Two Elk Gallery in Minturn, a boutique specializing in sophisticated decorative items for the home. A level of Western chic that was absent from the high country community became a reality in Two Elk Gallery. Vaughan recently relocated Two Elk to Edwards, an improvement she said, because the Edwards store has more space to display the same handcrafted riches and is full of natural light. Store Manager Tracy Fernandez, Assistant Buyer/Merchandiser Vandy Schaefer and Vaughan form the staff. These three women work as a team to handpick artisan pieces from Colorado and around the country that give Two Elk its uniqueness and sophistication. Some of the store highlights include glass blown drink stirrers, vintage-style French linens for the powder room, hand-etched glass bowls, coffee table books highlighting the West, sterling silver or leather frames, hand-beaded slippers, purses with a touch of glimmer, and just recently added as a result of the move, tableware and upholstered furniture.
The store also carries antique reproductions in addition to antiques, “so that the chest drawers will actually open,” said Vaughan with a laugh. They also provide new custom services, including wedding and baby shower registries, national shipping and gift-wrapping, in complimentary colors, summer brown and Colorado blue sky, a tribute to all naturalists. “Everyone can find something affordable,” said Fernandez. The goodies range from cashmere-soft Colorado stuffed animals, like buffalo and deer, for $9 to a mink trimmed cashmere blanket for a price that Fernandez wouldn’t even allow me to see.
Vaughan, Fernandez, and Schaefer are excited to tour the store with customers, explaining their whimsical collection piece by piece, or they’ll let the shopper peruse by themselves. Taking their advice is recommended because they’re the ones who hunt out Two Elk’s home treasures. They search for these pieces, both locally and nationally, unload them from the boxes, and proudly display them in a realistic setting to help everyone find their little something, or big something for their home.
