GYPSUM, Colorado ” Recess is always a welcome part of any elementary school student’s day.

This year, students at Gypsum Elementary School will find recess is even a bit better, thanks to a generous donation from the Delta Kappa Gamma sorority.

Following through on their “Sun-Safety” priorities, the local group ” a sorority of current and retired teachers ” has donated two, 15-foot tall pine trees to add some shade to the school’s playground.

“This wouldn’t be happening without their help,” said Principal Mitch Forsberg, as he and sorority members Linda Jones and Patty Kelly Brown watched landscaping crews plant the trees last week.

Jones, a retired teacher who had her own serious bout of skin cancer five years ago, has been a leader in the group’s sun safety education effort. In past years, the sorority, after a training session with the Colorado public health department, has visited area pre-schools to talk about sun safety and to supply each child with a brimmed hat.

The local group first got a $2,000 grant from its national chapter. The local group gave $1,600, which its members earned through such efforts as working the Minturn rummage sale.
