EAGLE — We all know that our diets will take a beating on Thanksgiving Day, but signing up for the Brush Creek Elementary School Turkey Trot can assuage some of the calorie guilt.
This year marks the sixth anniversary for the 5K or one mile run/walk event, which is a fundraiser for the school’s annual fourth-grade trip to 100 Elk Camp near Buena Vista.
“It’s just the best way to start your morning on Thanksgiving,” said Kristina Turner, one of the event organizers. She noted that everyone is welcome to trot.
“The high school boys team comes out and runs it like they mean it and moms come out and push their strollers,” she said.
Once the run is over, the fun continues. The Dusty Boot hosts an after party that features free breakfast burritos for trotters and race volunteers bring in baked goods and fruit for all to enjoy. There is an array of raffle prizes awarded and a silent auction will be set up for trotters and their entourage members to peruse. The auction winners will be announced at 10:30 a.m.
Turkey Trot prizes will be awarded to the top man, woman, boy and girl finishers in the 5K.
Turner said there are usually around 300 turkey trotters. “We are always hoping to make it a little bigger every year,” she said.
Registration costs $25 for individuals and $60 for a family of four with an additional $10 for each additional trotter. Participants can choose the 5K route laid out along the Eagle Ranch recreation paths or the 1 mile route through the neighborhood around Brush Creek Elementary School.
The first 200 trotters to register receive a T-shirt. While the pre-registration deadline has passed, Turner noted that runners and walkers can take advantage of a new registration window.
On race day, registration opens at 8 a.m. and the trot begins at 9 a.m.
The greater community is invited to join a Celebration of Pepi’s Life on Friday, Sept. 20, at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater.
