Truck crash closes Highway 6 east of Wolcott

EAGLE COUNTY — A truck hauling frozen meat crashed through the guardrail on Interstate 70, closing Highway 6 for nearly seven hours Monday.

At about 1 p.m., the 2014 Freightliner was traveling westbound on I-70 near the Wolcott exit. The vehicle failed to negotiate a left curve and traveled off the right side of the roadway, through the guard rail and down a steep embankment. The truck rolled one time, colliding with an elk fence and a drainage ditch.

The truck and trailer became separated during the roll. The truck came to rest on U.S. Highway 6, while the trailer came to rest off the south side of Highway 6. The driver, a 54-year-old male from Nebraska, was transported to Vail Valley Medical Center by ambulance. He sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries in the crash and was the only occupant.

Highway 6 was closed east of Wolcott for 6.75 hours due to the crash.
