Truck driver dies on I-70 in Vail
VAIL — Vail Police are investigating the death of a semi-truck driver that occurred at approximately 1:15 a.m. Thursday on eastbound Interstate 70 near mile marker 177. A Vail police officer stopped to check on a commercial vehicle that was parked on the roadway west of the chain-up area. The officer discovered the unconscious, unresponsive driver slumped over the steering wheel and immediately initiated emergency medical care. The driver, Donald Summers, 57, of Homosassa, Florida, was transported by Eagle County Paramedic Services to Vail Valley Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.
At the time of the incident, Colorado Department of Transportation was requiring traction devices for all commercial vehicles on Vail Pass. According to Vail Police detectives, it appears the driver suffered a medical event during the application of tire chains. The driver re-entered the vehicle after applying two of four tire chains.
Vail Fire Department, Eagle County Paramedic Services and Eagle County Coroner also responded to the incident. The Eagle County Coroner’s Office said the cause and manner of death will be determined when an autopsy is completed.
