Truck runs over woman, twice, police say

Daily Staff Report

GLENWOOD SPRINGS ” A 72-year-old woman suffered severe injuries Monday after being struck twice by a semi in West Glenwood.

The driver backed into the woman and then, not knowing he had hit her, pulled forward and ran over her, Glenwood Springs police chief Terry Wilson said.

He said the accident happened at about 6 p.m. at Highway 6 and Soccer Field Road. Wilson said it apparently occurred when the truck driver was parked east on Highway 6, was experiencing mechanical problems and decided to pull into a truck stop for repairs.

Wilson said witness accounts and evidence at the scene suggests the woman was walking from the south shoulder of Highway 6 north to Soccer Field Road, and the semi backed into her and knocked her down at the edge of the shoulder and crosswalk.

The driver then pulled forward and ran over her, stopping only when somebody ran out and alerted him, Wilson said.

The driver had not been charged as of early Monday evening, and Wilson did not have the names of the driver or victim available. Police were continuing to investigate the accident, he said.
