Turn upside down at Sunday yoga workshop in Vail
Vail, CO Colorado
VAIL, Colorado – If you’re seeking new perspectives in 2011, why not start with turning your life upside-down, literally? Local yoga teacher Julia Clarke is leading a foundational yoga workshop on the basics of arm balances and inversions Sunday at The Sanctuary at Finis Boni in Edwards from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Titled “The Balance Within,” the workshop will break down poses like handstand, headstand and forearm balance.
“I noticed that most of the workshops being offered in our community were geared towards taking handstand and headstand further, but the foundations of these challenging poses weren’t always being addressed,” she said. “How can you put your feet on your head in handstand when you can’t do handstand to begin with?”
Clarke will lead practitioners through a short vinyasa flow practice designed to warm the muscles, engage the core strength and lubricate the joints for arm balancing and inversions. Then she will break down the techniques of entering, sustaining and exiting key arm balances and inversions in a workshop-style setting with partner work, props, modifications, and plenty of time for questions.
“These poses are often thrown into yoga classes without much instruction, and so they become scary and daunting, but when we learn how to approach these poses safely, they become fun and playful,” Clarke said. “Mastering them can improve confidence, and practicing them frequently increases blood flow to the brain, improves respiratory health and posture.”
The workshop is appropriate for all levels, but not advised for those with neck or shoulder injuries. The cost is $25 in advance, $30 day-of. The Sanctuary is located in the Riverwalk in Edwards, above Finis Boni. Call 970-926-9060 or register online at http://www.finisboni.com.
