Tuscan winemaker comes to Avon Wednesday

AVON – Avon restaurant and wine bar, vin48, is hosting a Tuscan-focused wine tasting Wednesday night. Winemaker Alessandro Landini of I Greppi and Fattoria Viticcio will lead a wine tasting from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the restaurant’s wine bar.

Landini , a second generation winemeker from Greve in Tuscany, began making wine at his families Viticcio estate in Greve and has recently purchased the I Greppi estate in Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast.

The Viticcio Estate stands amidst a rustic complex overlooks sloping, sunny vineyards above the picturesque, ancient town of Greve in Chianti. It lies midway between the cities of Florence and Siena, in the heart of Chianti Classico region.

Landini, by following in his father’s footsteps, is the epitome of a new class of wine entrepreneurs. His work philosophy can be summed up in the three fundamental characteristics; passion for viticulture and the techniques and science of wine-making, competence, and professionalism.

“Having Alessandro here pouring his delicious wines promises to be a great start to our summer tasting series,” said Greg Eynon, owner/wine director of vin48. “I think our guests will have fun comparing the traditional Sangiovese-based wines from Chianti with the more modern Cabernet-based wines from Bolgheri.”

When Landini decided to try his luck in Bolgheri, he had no idea how quickly he would find success. It has been clear for years that the Bolgheri area on the Mediterranean coast of Tuscany – too hot for Sangiovese but perfectly suited to Bordeaux varietals – could produce wines of outstanding quality, but the rave reviews that I Greppi’s wines received from both the Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate for their first vintage were a very pleasant surprise, not a small feat considering that the majority of the estate’s vineyards are only four or five years old. The principle grape varietals are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, farmed organically like at Viticcio.

Every Wednesday, the restaurant will serve wines from visiting winemakers, importers and industry insiders, paired with chef/owner Charles Hays’ cuisine. All the wines served are available for purchase at discounted prices from Beaver Liquors in Avon.
