Two 14ers may reopen this fall

ALMA, Colorado ” Hikers may get legal access to the summits of two 14,000-foot peaks in Park County this fall after years of planning.

Landowners cut off access to Mount Lincoln and Mount Democrat in 2005, mostly because of liability concerns.

Since then, the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative, federal agencies, landowners and others have been working on opening safe and legal routes.

The groups said Friday that trail construction is expected to begin this summer and the two peaks could be open by fall.

The summit of a third 14,000-foot peak, Mount Bross, may remain off-limits. The groups say they haven’t been able to contact some landowners, and others are unwilling to allow access.

Colorado has 54 “Fourteeners” ” mountains at least 14,000 feet high.
