Two killed in Saturday accident on U.S. 6 near New Castle
A Glenwood Springs man and his female passenger were both killed in a crash early Saturday morning on U.S. 6 between Canyon Creek and New Castle, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
According to a news release issued Monday afternoon, Erick Mondragon, 20, of Glenwood Springs was eastbound in a 1995 Toyota pickup truck around 3:45 a.m. when he lost control on a lefthand curve, skidded off the highway and rolled his truck before striking a steel fence.
Both Mondragon and his passenger, Amalia Cabrera-Torres, 19, of New Castle, were pronounced dead at the scene. Mondragon was not wearing his seat belt, but Cabrera-Torres was, the State Patrol said. Alcohol and speed are being investigated as contributing factors in the crash, it said.
Highway 6 was closed for about four hours between Canyon Creek and New Castle from 6:44 a.m. until 10:54 a.m. while the State Patrol investigated the accident.
