FARMER’S KORNER ” Two Summit High School students were struck and injured by a car as they crossed Highway 9 near the busy entrance of the school, trying to get to a nearby bus stop, authorities said Wednesday.

Colorado State Patrol confirmed that the accident happened Wednesday around 3:10 p.m, a time when masses of students usually flood the busy area when school lets out for the day.

The girls, presumably students at the high school, were hit by a black BMW sedan, driven by a man estimated to be in his 40s, according to witnesses and the CSP. Charges have not been filed, but are pending due to an investigation.

“It’s a busy section of the highway, that’s for sure. We’ve definitely covered several crashes over the years in that area,” said Trooper Ryan Boone, with the CSP.

Boone confirmed that one of the grils suffered not-so serious injuries, but could not confirm the status of the other accident victim at press time. Both were taken to nearby St. Anthony’s Summit Medical Center.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described one girl as having injuries to her mouth and face, while the other girl more seriously injured lay prone on the ground, bleeding from the head, disoriented about what had happened to her.

“After the cops got there, all the kids were trying to tell her that she got hit by a car, and one of (the girl’s) friends was over her crying really hard,” described SHS freshman Kaylie Miller. “People were trying to help her.”
