Two wildland fires have broken out about two miles west of Boulder up Boulder Canyon causing officials to evacuate a large number of homes, according to Sarah Huntley, spokeswoman for the Boulder Fire Department.

The fires, currently totaling about 10 acres, are located about a quarter mile west of Elephant Buttress above Dome Rock, according to Huntley.

A total of 181 homes have received reverse notification calls to evacuate.

The fires are in close proximity to one another, according to Huntley. They are just off Colorado 119.

Currently more than two dozen firefighters from five agencies are battling the fires which are shooting flames into the air and spreading thick white smoke over Boulder.
