Udall, Beauprez heading for Iraq

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Mark Udall, Eagle County’s congressman, is heading to Iraq on his second fact-finding trip to the war-torn country. The Democrat from Boulder County is being joined by Rep. Bob Beauprez, R-Arvada.The Colorado lawmakers left Washington on Thursday and are due back Tuesday.Udall, who is a member of the Armed Services Committee and who visited Iraq in September, says he hopes to meet with military leaders, American troops and Iraqi officials about the current situation in Iraq and to get a better idea of what steps have been taken to create stability in the region since the January elections.Udall is on record as opposing the war but says he also wants stability brought to the country. “I am looking forward to my second trip to see first-hand what is happening in Iraq and to visit with our troops,” Udall said.”As a new member of the House Armed Services Committee, I believe I have a responsibility to make this trip, once again, in order to gain a deeper understanding of the conditions our troops face,” he added. Beauprez also is making his second trip to Iraq.”My last visit to Iraq came just before the capture of Saddam Hussein,” he said. “Since his capture, so much progress has been made for the Iraqi people, highlighted by their recent historic elections.”The trip is being sponsored by the House Armed Services Committee.Vail, Colorado
