Upgrade your trash can

Vail Daily Editorial
Vail CO, Colorado

The price of being a Vail property owner just got $170 more expensive.

But unlike the other premiums for living here, you really are getting what you pay for with this one.

Vail residents have until April 15 to replace their old trash cans with bear resistant ones. The price tag is between $160 and $170 for the new trash can.

Vail town officials are trying to soften the blow a bit by offering a $150 refund to 10 residents who buy their cans by the April 15 deadline.

Vail’s new law requiring the bear-resistant trash cans was a long time coming.

In the summers past we’ve read reports of bears breaking into homes, ransacking kitchens and terrorizing residents because they were lured by the irresistible smell of human trash. In many of those cases, the bear had to be destroyed because it posed a threat to humans.

Also, in many cases, those incidents could have been avoided if every resident disposed of their trash correctly.

The bear-resistant trash cans will reduce the human-error element. That protects bears from harm, and more importantly, it protects us.
