VAIL, Colorado ” The Vail Athletic Club’s kids Climbing Teams and Mountain Divas are joining forces to raise money and awareness for literacy and education. The groups will be climbing either mountains or the indoor climbing wall to support Room To Read, an organization that partners with local communities throughout the developing world to provide quality educational opportunities by establishing libraries, creating local language children’s books, constructing schools, providing education to girls and establishing computer labs.

Ellen Miller, the outdoor fitness manager at the Vail Athletic Club, is organizing the events. As a Himalayan climber, Miller has spent time climbing in Nepal and Tibet and has seen firsthand the lack of education there, she said.

Author John Wood founded Room to Read. After reading Wood’s book, “Leaving Microsoft to Change the World,” Miller was inspired to find a way to tie in her love of climbing with giving back, she said.

For $250, one child can be sponsored to attend school for a year in a developing country.

“We’ve teamed up with all of the children on the climbing team and with the Mountain Divas and we’re all one big team. We’re all climbing to raise money for Room to Read. The Divas will be climbing 14ers and the kids will be climbing the indoor climbing wall,” Miller said.

In return, Miller and the climbers are hoping the public will sponsor a climber to help raise funds.

“However people want to sponsor us ” whether it’s a flat donation or a per foot vertical donation, there aren’t any strict guidelines,” she said. “The main point is to give kids in Third World countries an opportunity for education. … It’s a really beautiful thing to do be doing what you love and helping someone at the same time.”

There will be two Climb for Literacy sessions, one on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., and one on Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon, or 1 to 3 p.m. The public is invited to “Sponsor a Climber” in their efforts to cover vertical feet on the indoor climbing wall to raise funds. Vail Pet Partners will be bringing certified R.E.A.D. Dogs to demonstrate how dogs can help kids learn to read. Visit http://www.sitstayread.org for more information.

The Vail Athletic Club is located at 352 E. Meadow Drive in Vail Village. For details, call Ellen Miller at 970-477-3220, or visit http://www.roomtoread.org.
