Vail candidate questionnaire: Farrow Hitt

Q: Why are you running for Vail Town Council?

A: I want to offer my time and experience again to the Vail community. My experience from past councils coupled with my strong business background continue to provide the tools necessary to get the job done. I have a proven track record and will work towards the continued success of our community and resort as Vail charges forward.

Q: What are the biggest issues facing Vail right now?

A: • Expanded marketing efforts and opportunities.

• Further vetting of the Ever Vail development project.

• Negotiating the Developer Improvement Agreement (DIA) between Vail Resorts and the town (very important).

• Identify year-round economic drivers and pursue viable opportunities.

• Further study the public/private partnership with the medical community expanding on the health and wellness idea furthering a year-round economy.

• When possible, less executive meetings and more open discussions, especially concerning big ticket items.

Q: How would you rate the work the current Town Council has done? What are some specific examples of what it has done right and/or wrong?

A: The current council has done a good job staying focused on the financial position of the town. Realizing the potential impacts, council’s decisions to marketing dollar allocations, programs and direction has proven successful and on target.

Too much time is spent in executive sessions as of late, however, it may be warranted. I was disappointed at the council’s acceptance of pay-in-lieu of skier drop-off parking. We need more close-in skier drop-off parking at all Vail ski portals, not a quick check deposited into the general fund. The chambers can always be more user friendly towards the public and staff. We are all part of the machine that is Vail and should all be afforded mutual respect and common courtesy.

Q: Do you generally support Vail Resorts’ proposed Ever Vail project? Why or why not?

A: The Ever Vail project is an exciting proposition for Vail. I do generally support it. Having worked on the DIA of the Arrabelle and Front Door Project, I understand the complexities and look forward to working on the Ever Vail project’s many facets.

Clearly Ever Vail is the biggest development project this town has seen in some time. Getting it right is critical. I can be that guy, assuring public input and additional transparency throughout the continued process. I share that same excitement for the medical/town partnership into health and wellness. Experience does matter.

Q: Ask and answer your own question that will help voters decide how to vote.

A: Should the Simba Run Underpass project be planned in conjunction with the initial development plans of Ever Vail?

Since SRU is an integral part of the entire West Lionshead redevelopment project, my answer is yes. It’s important to know in advance how SRU is going to successfully tie into its neighboring redevelopment. Discussions on associated costs, CDOT participation, timing and staging seem prudent early on. The planning of the Simba Run Underpass should coincide with the Ever Vail planning stages.
