Vail council will talk economy

Daily Staff Report
Vail, CO Colorado

VAIL, Colorado “The Vail Town Council will hold a special meeting in the Town Council Chambers beginning at 3 p.m. Tuesday to continue discussing economic stimulus ideas that were generated during two sessions earlier this week.

The first session, a town-sponsored panel discussion, featured comments from Rob Katz, chief executive officer of Vail Resorts; Dick Cleveland, mayor; Kent Logan, a retired investment banker representing Vail Citizens for Action; and Ralf Garrison, founder and senior analyst of MTRiP, the Mountain Travel Research Program.

Logan and six other business leaders who have formed Vail Citizens for Action have also come forward with a two-pronged strategy that was presented to the Town Council on Tuesday.

The strategy includes stimulating business for the 2008-09 winter season by augmenting Vail Resorts’ winter marketing campaign with funds from the Vail Local Marketing District. The group is also advocating laying the groundwork to re-stimulate Vail’s renewal in 2010 by focusing on approvals for the Ever Vail development and others.

The Tuesday agenda includes a report on winter marketing by Kelli McDonald, the town’s economic development manager, and Chris Jarnot, chief operating officer of Vail Mountain. They will present recommendations generated during a meeting of the Vail Local Marketing District Advisory Council held on Thursday.

In addition, the agenda includes discussion of keeping Vail Valley Medical Center in Vail, creating a plan for permanent parking, and determining a ballot issue for reallocation of the $10 million in conference center funds for the November election.
