Vail Daily column: Relax, recharge, and gear up for a great summer

Scott SpeedyVail ChamberVail, CO Colorado

With closing day of the 2011-12 skiing/riding season Sunday at both Vail and Beaver Creek, I want to take a moment to reflect on this past winter and envision the upcoming summer season. We as a community of business people all worked very hard to make sure that our most valuable asset, our guests, had a great experience playing in and enjoying the recreational environment of Vail Valley. The snow was light, but our workloads remained as full as our commitments to create and deliver first-class guest experiences. The world-renowned guest service that the Vail and Beaver Creek business community delivers all season long isn’t easy, but it is the key to our collective success … even more so in a challenging season like 2011-12. Vail and Beaver Creek are at the leading edge of the mountain leisure category and we should take a moment to enjoy a little rest and relief during the upcoming shoulder season. The next few months will also have its share of challenges as we move from ski and snowboard season to construction season. A lot of great and exciting projects will be getting under way and all of them should help to elevate the Vail and Beaver Creek experience in the long run. A new gondola rising out of Vail Village, the completion of the Lionshead parking garage and the improvements to the Lionshead bus stop areas are just a few of the projects that will continue to keep Vail at the forefront of the industry. As we negotiate the cones and construction zones of summer, we need to do so with a smile and an eye on our future success. Enjoy your well earned vacation, get outdoors and take this opportunity to enjoy all that our valley offers. While the days are getting longer, be sure to take the time to experience our many mountain resort activities. One of the most exciting times of the year is just a short 40 days away. With the flowers in full bloom and the temperature cool when the rest of the country is getting warmer by the day, the Vail Valley is the perfect respite from the heat of the city. Our activities are endless and our facilities are first rate. We all moved here for the winter season and stayed for the summer season – so let’s continue to deliver our world-class guest experience as we share all of the summer offerings. We will continue to work hard to maintain Vail and Beaver Creek’s quality reputations while enjoying what the rest of world travels here to do. Go for a bike ride, play a round of golf, volunteer your time, hike the mountains, raft a river, go for a horseback ride and give yourself an opportunity to rest and recharge. As the construction subsides and our businesses begin the ramp back up for the peak of the summer season, we will have to go back to our commitment to our guests and once again focus on our promise of world-class customer service. We continue to deliver what all of the Vail Chamber and Business Association members do each and every day. We keep our storefronts clean and welcoming. We make sure our windows are shining and displayed to the highest possible standards. We make sure our bars and restaurants are fully stocked and ready to do business. We roll up our sleeves and get to work taking care of our guests. We welcome our residents and our guests with a smile and an acknowledgement that they are the lifeblood of our community’s success. We are in business to do business and if we always keep our eyes on the big picture, our long-term viability will continue to increase.Enjoy the closing day of our mountains, relax and re-charge with a vacation and then embrace the changes our community will see this off-season. Look forward to one of our best times of the year as summer quickly approaches, and keep up the hard work. We chose to live here in the mountains because of the outdoors and all of the mountain offerings. Embrace our challenges and live our lifestyle as we share our community with our most important ally – our guests.Stay involved and stay informed.
