Vail Daily editorial: Good day to give

Some local nonprofits will benefit from an online effort today to put giving on steroids.

Today is Colorado Gives Day, a 24-hour period to give online and have donations matched in a formula we’d best leave to the website where you can get more information:

Leave it to financial folk to set up an incentive with formula, but let’s first express gratitude to FirstBank for pitching in $250,000 as the lead gift for the drive. Hey, with that kind of donation, you can come up with Beautiful Mind formulas if you are of mind. We’ll just call it what it is, a beautiful thing.

FirstBank will build on your contribution to the nonprofit of your choice in this bid to raise $1 million today.

They are working with the Denver-based Community First Foundation founded in 1975 “to improve quality of life by increasing community generosity and involvement.”

The first Colorado Gives Day seems like a good way to further the mission.

Locally, the Roundup River Ranch, SOS Outreach and the Vail Valley Foundation will benefit from the event, with your help.

The Roundup River Ranch is part of the Hole in the Wall Camps founded by Paul Newman in 1988 that provides camping experience for children with life-threatening illnesses.

SOS Outreach aims to build character through outdoor activities and the SOS curriculum.

And the Vail Valley Foundation, which stages many of the biggest events in the valley and operates the Vilar Performing Arts Center, might be best described by outlining its mission to provide “leadership in educations, athletic and cultural endeavors.”

All are worthy and tested nonprofits here. And today the timing is right with the promise to add a little bounce to your donation through this opportunity.
