Vail Daily editorial: Something to smile about
Vail, CO Colorado
Good morning. It’s a great day for opening a mountain.
Not just a mountain, but The Mountain as far as America is concerned. Sure, that’s a bit of hometown pride. Never mind that this sentiment also happens to be true.
And it certainly is today.
Contrast to last year’s opening day, a white ribbon of death, a dearth of snow, during what we all hope will prove to be about as deep as this downturn goes.
The economy still drags. But some things are looking up. Lodging occupancy. Group business. Real estate, at least a little.
And the early snow. This is crucial for the resort towns, back to being the engines of business as real estate and construction wane finally after a quarter of century of mostly booming.
Maybe we’ll mark the beginning of the true comeback as opening day 2010.
We’re talking a bounty here: lifts from the gondola to Vista Bahn, along with Game Creek, and more than 1,000 acres to stretch out on.
In short, something to really smile about. Now that’s how winter should start. Make sure you get out there yourself.
