Vail Daily letter: Big hearts

Anne and Michael DunlevieEagle, CO Coloradoletters@vaildaily.com

Small Champions is a homegrown nonprofit that makes a mountain-sized difference in the lives of local kids with multiple disabilities. Focused on their abilities versus their disabilities, Small Champions ages 5 through high school let loose on the mountain, shine in the horse arena and leave their wheelchairs for mountain-climbing harnesses. Whatever it takes, they are up to the challenge! There is almost no ski run on Vail Mountain that hasn’t been conquered by a Small Champion! And, no volunteer-instructor that hasn’t had their heart conquered in the process. In the horse arena, Socks, Chili and P.J., the most amazing therapy horses, connect with our champions and offer a place to cowboy up while strengthening core, mending spirits and bringing out the biggest smiles! You can’t believe how thankful our Small Champions’ families are to have such life-changing opportunities for our children right here in our own valley.Small Champions could not exist without the support of our sponsors and local community members: Vail Resorts, Vail Golf Course, Eagle Ranch Golf Course, El Pomar, Vail Valley Surgical Center, R&H Mechanical, Kent & Vicky Logan, Pat Tierney, Andrea Ohde, Kathy Mikolasy, Avignon Stone, Eagle Valley Community Fund, Vail Valley Cares, Vail Recreation District, WECMRD and many others who believe in and support a “can-do” spirit.
