Re: “Sexual morality is seldom simple,” March 4: The one scriptural citation in this column by Jack Van Ens (Acts 15:1) is used entirely out of context. Act 15 is all about not circumcising, as in 15:10. (See also Romans 2:29, Romans 3:30, I Corinthians 7:18, I Corinthians 12:18, Galatians 5:6, Galatians 5:2, Galatians 6:15, Philippians 3:2, Colossians 2:12, Matthew 9:12). Circumcision is not part of Christianity.

Rick Santorum should know that circumcision is against official Catholic doctrine. Catechism article 2297 says non-consensual amputations are against the moral law. Pius XII affirmed in 1952 that circumcision is only appropriate to treat medical conditions that can’t be countered any other way. Popes have affirmed Cantate Domino (1442) every centuy since it was drafted, and it says circumcision “cannot possibly be observed without loss of eternal salvation.”
