Vail Daily letter: Close call on Vail Mountain
Vail, CO, Colorado
I beg you to slow down! What was supposed to be a family ski day nearly ended in tragedy. My fiance, 5-year-old daughter and I were to enjoy a gorgeous day on the hill when we narrowly escaped what could have been the most tragic event.
With our daughter in the middle on skis, he in the front snowboarding and me bringing up the rear to ensure the highest level of safety, we headed over to Lodgepole.
My 5-year-old has become a pretty amazing skier already taking runs off Chair 5. I was unable to ski with her last year due to being pregnant. With our 9 week old at home I was so excited to see how far her skiing had come.
We started down Lodgepole, my fiance, my daughter and then me. After passing the first roller, I slowed down to watch her linking turns and so proud I was.
Out of the corner of my eye a 20-something on a snowboard flew through the air blindly over the roller. My daughter’s life flashed before my eyes as I screamed, “No!” It was like a slow motion horror film about to take place. A mother’s worst nightmare! “No!”
With my scream, the boarder was able to land before taking out my daughter. My fiance and I unstrapped and ran while praying that our girl was OK!
I reached my daughter, who was hysterically crying, and thankfully she was more shaken than hurt.
The boarder was beyond apologetic and shaken as he knew that he narrowly escaped committing manslaughter.

Are we seeing more bears because there are more bears on the valley floor, or because we’re all spending more time at home? It could be a bit of both.
