Vail Daily letter: Conservatives want their cake and to eat it too
Vail, CO, Colorado
The author of “Free market should reign” simply rephrases the every day rants from many conservative, partisan talking heads.
Many Americans wish for less regulation and bureaucratic entanglement. But if the idea is that our commerce system is to somehow truly operate in a free market, then all government participation disappears.
Of course, that’s not really what these folks want. The loud voices only want government to eliminate regulations that they perceive to be onerous to their particular business interests — typically environmental protections, taxes, ethical constraints, minimum wage and the like.
However, these same enterprises would scream even more loudly if free market meant losing their government subsidies, tax breaks, trade protections, patents and favorable industry legislation.
Only when the so-called free-marketers are ready to give up their government entitlements and compete in an open and free market will we the people start to listen. And we won’t be holding our breath.
