Vail Daily letter: Don’t duck rope

After over a foot of snow, I know you want to find the powder, but this year’s snow condition have kept some parts of Vail Mountain closed like Skree Field late into the season.

There are only four closed trails out of 193 trails, so it’s not too hard to find another way down. Vail is now above a 30-inch base and Arapahoe Basin does not open its East Wall until there is a base of 55 inches.

Good things come to those who wait, but I got anxious and ducked under a double rope closure, resulting in my pass being “hot listed” and some new scratches on my board from snow-covered rocks.

Keep in mind there is a reason for the closures. If you’re not sure, then just ask somebody. Ski patrol has offices at Belle’s Camp, Two Elk, Mountain Top, and Eagle’s Nest.

I can vouch that the snow is still very shallow and unstable. All it would take is one snow-covered rock to catch my board, throwing me down. And if I could not get back up, then only ski patrol would have the expertise to get me out, and even worse I would be putting rescuers in a situation where they could get injured trying to help me.
