Vail Daily letter: Excellent care in Vail

To the citizens of Vail: I am a physician from Fort Collins who has been coming to Vail to ski and bike since 1966. Over the years, I have had the occasion to use your medical facilities several times, starting with a broken tib-fib in 1975. This past week, I sustained serious injuries descending Vail Mountain on my bike. They included four rib fractures with a collapsed lung, three fractures in the pelvis, and a serious cardiac arrhythmia that put me into your ICU for five days. I just wanted to say that you have come a long way since 1975, when you didn’t even have an orthopedic surgeon to fix my broken leg.

I thought the care I received was world-class from start to finish, starting with my evacuation off the mountain by your summer ski patrol and paramedics. I’m embarrassed to admit I can’t remember your names – fog of trauma or old age – but thank you for your excellent care nonetheless. In the hospital and ICU, thanks to all the staff for excellent and compassionate care. Especially to Suzy for noticing my potentially fatal arrhythmia. Also to Ashleigh, Mary, Carrie and all the X-ray and EKG techs. And thanks to Drs. Lawrence, Elton and Gaul.

You should be very proud of the quality of your medical facility and its staff, especially given the size of your community. Thank you again for your care. With any luck, I’ll see you on the slopes this winter.
