Vail Daily letter: He’s the man!
Vail, CO, Colorado
Don Olsen deserves highest thanks and praise for being one of the most caring friends the Eagle County seniors have ever had. His position as Eagle-Minturn transportation and program assistant was always more than a job to him. It was his pleasure and passion. He performed it superbly. Don’s smiles and cheerful attitude have always been an inspiration that all enjoyed – and some really needed at difficult times.
Whether he was driving on a trip, picking up or returning people home following lunches, taking seniors to the post office or grocery shopping, Don could always be counted on to go the second mile.
He performed tasks well beyond his job description, I am certain, such as carrying grocery bags right up to the door for those he felt required extra assistance. Not being a resident of the senior housing, I did not always witness these special kindnesses firsthand, but have heard of them over and over from grateful residents.
Over his desk a few years ago, I noticed the words of an old hymn Don and I both love, “Count Your Blessings.” When Eagle County seniors count ours, Don’s name should surely be way up on our lists for his dedicated service these dozen or more years. At one time, he even cooked for us! It was delicious. Also not to be overlooked are the faithful seniors and other community volunteers who put in many hours of servie. The lunch programs and other activities may not be possible if they did not help. That calls for another huge thank you!
