Vail Daily letter: Hidden Gems favored 2-1
Vail, CO, Colorado
I believe that most of us who live and recreate in the White River National Forest region can agree that protecting our public lands is an important common value. We all appreciate the beautiful scenery, clean water, and recreational opportunities provided to us by our backyard public lands.
That is why I’m confused when some people are so vocal against wilderness designation. Polls show that residents support the Hidden Gems proposal 2-1.
Wilderness protects the most valuable, pristine places we have left from things like logging, natural gas and road building. Wilderness doesn’t close land in any way; we can all enter wilderness, and hike, backpack, hunt, fish, kayak, and use wheelchairs.
Consider that though wilderness limits certain types of uses, the protection it provides for our ecosystems is infinitely more valuable. Hidden Gems has done a lot of outreach and has been extremely responsive to stakeholder input.
I heartily support Hidden Gems and you too may express your support for Hidden Gems to our elected officials at http://www.whiteriverwild.org.
