Vail Daily letter: If I were president …
Avon, CO Colorado
The news is filled with the economic problems we face and proposed solutions. Obama says if we spend more of what we don’t have, we’ll solve the problem. Raise taxes, lower taxes, create “WPA-like jobs,” etc., etc. How about some good old-fashioned common sense?
We have a government mentality or culture of excess. It’s kinda like your great aunt died and left you a bundle. Would you spend that money the way you would spend the money you got calluses earning? I don’t think so. We need to break the culture.
So what would I do, you ask? I’d call all (yes all) my Cabinet heads in and tell them they had 30 days to cut 10 percent out of their budgets, no ifs, ands or buts. And if they couldn’t, I’d ask them to tender their resignation and I’d hire someone who could.
Now tell me there’s a department or agency of the government that can’t find 10 percent excess. Right … there ain’t one. Then, in about 60 days, I’d call those same good old boys and girls back in and tell them to do it again … yes, with no ifs, ands or buts. Guess what? About three or four of those little tea parties (pardon the pun), and we’d have the start of a recovery.
Just a little good old common sense.
