In memory of Eric

Thank you to everyone who attended or supported the Battle Mountain Husky Cross Country Invitational and first annual Eric Spry Memorial 5K. First and foremost, thank you to Jeanne Sagurton for allowing us to do this to remember and honor Eric, and thank you for being a part of it. We could think of no better way to honor Eric than to go for a run up at Beaver Creek. We were surrounded by Eric’s family, friends and teammates, and we shared a memorable morning that had Eric and running as the center of attention.

We were able to fundraise more than $3,000, and we hope to raise even more, to start a scholarship fund in Eric’s name. Our plan is for the Eric Spry Memorial Scholarship to be awarded each spring to an outstanding student-athlete who best exemplifies the qualities that made Eric so special.

Eric was a four-year runner for both the track and cross-country teams at Battle Mountain. He earned varsity letters, was a captain and competed in state meets. More importantly, he was a great teammate who would always cheer and support others, he had a huge heart, and his dedication to improvement was unmatched. Eric loved running, and he loved to talk about it. He would run numerous races each summer, and he had plans to run another half-marathon. Eric continued to run with his friends while at CSU studying health and exercise science.

A special thank-you to Eric’s running buddy, friend and mentor, Tom VanCleave. Thank you to Battle Mountain cross-country athletes both past and present. Having Eric’s past teammates there is something I will never forget. Others were unable to make it because they were away at college, but we received well wishes from so many of them. I know all of you would have been here if you were able.

The running family at Battle Mountain is strong, we are always there for each other, and we will always carry Eric’s memory with us. And thank you to all of the parents, coaches, teachers, friends, Battle Mountain football and soccer, Eagle Valley cross-country, Beaver Creek Public Safety Patrol and everybody else who took part in the day.

Thank you to our sponsors: Beaver Creek Resort Co., Vail Rec District, Vail Summit Orthopedics, Complements For Your Home, US Bank, Base Mountain Sports, Gaylord Gardens, Mountain Shades (Optic Nerve), The Dusty Boot, Alpine Bank, Eagle Diner, First Bank, Vail Valley Foundation and Starbucks Coffee in Edwards. This event would not have been possible without your generosity and commitment to our community. We are truly grateful.

Please mark your calendar to join us for the Husky Cross Country Invitational and second annual Eric Spry Memorial 5K on Sept. 8, 2012. If you would still like to make a donation to the Eric Spry Memorial Scholarship Fund, please make donations payable to “Battle Mountain Cross Country” and please put “Spry memorial” in the memo. One hundred percent of these funds will go toward the scholarship. Donations can be sent to: Battle Mountain High School, Attention: Cross Country, Ken Long, 151 Miller Ranch Road, Edwards, CO 81632.

Thank you!
