Vail Daily letter: Land worth protecting
Vail, CO, Colorado
I did not know much about the Hidden Gems wilderness proposal until I attended a living-room presentation on the subject recently.
I was extremely impressed by the painstaking work the campaign has done reaching out to stakeholders, government agencies, private landowners and other experts to make this the best possible proposal for the community.
Moreover, I was thrilled by the opportunity the Hidden Gems campaign provides us to protect our wildlife, watersheds and well-being for the distant future.
I moved here recently from New York, and am endlessly inspired by the beauty and wildness that surrounds us. However, we have to take action to protect what we’ve got, not just for our sake but for the sake of our wildlife and our future.
The Hidden Gems proposal would protect vital mid-elevation habitat for winter migration, denning and breeding. It also would help connect protected areas along the spine of the continent, which runs from Mexico to the Arctic, areas crucial for wildlife migration.
I may have to move back east soon, but I hope that the locals here all appreciate the great wild places they have, and choose to support the best possible protection for them so that we may all benefit, wherever we live.
