Vail Daily letter: Making a difference
Vail, CO, Colorado
Each year over 9,000 meals are sent home with schoolchildren in Eagle County through a simple, nondescript backpack program. These backpacks are stuffed with nutritious food for a weekend and replenished each and every week by a core group of volunteers lead by Toni Berns.
I had the distinct privilege of meeting Toni at the recent KZYR all-day radio-a-thon sponsored by Vail Resorts’ Echo program.
I was moved by her tender being and general concern for the less fortunate in our fortunate community.
As a result of Echo’s endless array of merchandise to auction, KZYR’s True Local listeners’ generosity and the passion of Toni Berns and her mission, we exceeded our goal by 40 percent.
We salute all bidders and participants who made the radio-a-thon a true local testament to the altruistic nature of our community.

Are we seeing more bears because there are more bears on the valley floor, or because we’re all spending more time at home? It could be a bit of both.
