Vail Daily letter: Natural selection

I was struck by the juxtaposition of two commentaries in Thursday’s Vail Daily. On page A6, Butch Mazzuca led off his commentary by referring to Darwin’s theory of natural selection and how thoughtless human acts interfere with the natural process.

Just across the way, on page A7, Bennett Pollack lauded VR’s policy of not grooming during the day as it would avoid killing idiots. Another thoughtless intervention, I guess.

For my part, I think it’s sad that the stupid acts of a few idiots can negatively impact the enjoyment of the many. But I guess that happens all too often these days – too many idiots and lawyers. Also, it’s not clear to me why Mr. Pollack is concerned about some skier catching an edge while skiing 200 yards from the groomers, a distance any sane skier or boarder would maintain.
