Vail Daily letter: No comparison between Haiti and Gaza

U.S. Reps. Keith Ellison, Betty McCollum and James Oberstar sent a letter to President Obama urging him to use diplomatic pressure to resolve the blockade affecting the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. The letter says, “The current blockade has severely impeded the ability of aid agencies to do their work to relieve suffering.” This letter (probably) was induced by the outstanding humanitarian aid Israel gave to Haiti after the earthquake and goes along with the thinking of people who say, “Gaza is only next door to Israel. Why doesn’t Israel help them in the same way?”

The letter does acknowledge that “the people of southern Israel have suffered abhorrent rocket and mortar attacks” and “the government has imposed restrictions on Gaza out of a legitimate and keenly felt fear of continued terrorist action by Hamas and other militant groups.”

In spite of this, the letter goes on to say, “This concern must be addressed without resulting in the de facto collective punishment of the Palestinian residents of the Gaza Strip.”

The letter does not acknowledge that truckloads of food and medical supplies cross into Gaza every day from Israel. Once the trucks are unloaded, Hamas hijacks the contents for their cronies and disciples.

This letter was signed by only 50 congressmen and women. The other hundreds of Congress people clearly understand what has happened, and is happening in the Gaza under Hamas rule.

People get the government they vote for. The people of Gaza voted for Hamas, and supported Hamas when they staged a coup and overthrew the Palestinian Authority. Terrorists cannot operate in a vacuum! They need people to feed them and house them and provide mobility for them. The Palestinian population in Gaza does this for Hamas and willingly runs to the buildings’ roofs to thwart retaliation for missiles shot from hospitals, schools and private homes. We’ve all seen the many pictures on television and so we know this is true.

Even the Egyptians (their Arab brothers) have become very wary of Hamas, a branch of the Muslim Brotherhood. The close relationship among Hamas, Iran and Hezbollah has only strengthened the perception of the threat posed by Hamas to all nations in the area, not only Israel.

So why help a people whose main goal is the demise of Israel and a destabilization of the entire Middle East?

Let me make this clear. There is absolutely no comparison between innocent Haitians who suffered a natural disaster and the self-made suffering of the Palestinians in Gaza.

The Haitians sadly were in the wrong time and place, and only God knows why this tragedy befell them.

On the other hand, the Gazans democratically chose a government that made it crystal clear from the get-go that their policy and goals were to destroy Israel. When you lob thousands of missiles at a sworn enemy’s population, you must eventually suffer the consequences of those actions. It’s too bad that the people of Gaza are under the brutal authoritarian regime that puts its own political extremist agenda ahead of the well being of its people, but they voted for it.

I am printing the names of the Congress people who signed this disgraceful letter. If you are visiting from any of these states, please take note that your congressman lacks the ability to know the difference between right and wrong.

Arizona – Raul Grijalva; California – Lois Capps, Sam Farr, Bob Filner, Barbara Lee, Loretta Sanchez, Pete Stark, Michael Honda, Lynn Woolsey, Jackie Speier, Diane Watson, George Miller; Connecticut – Jim Himes; Indiana – Andre Carson; Iowa – Bruce Braley; Kentucky – John Yarmuth; Maryland – Elijah Cummings, Donna Edwards; Massachusetts – Michael Capuano, William Delahunt, Jim McGovern, John Tierney, John Oliver, Stephen Lynch; Michigan – John Conyers, John Dingell, Carolyn Kilpatrick: Minnesota – Ellison, McCollum, and Oberstar; New Jersey – Donald Payne, Rush Holt, Bill Pascrell; New York – Yvette Clarke, Maurice Hinchey, Paul Tonko, Eric Massa; North Carolina – David Price; Ohio – Mary Jo Kilroy, Marcy Kaptur; Oregon – Earl Blumenauer, Peter DelFazio; Pennsylvania – Chaka Fattah, Joe Sestak; Vermont – Jim Moran; Virginia – Tammy Baldwin, Glenn Nye; Washington – Jim McDermott, Adam Smith, Jay Inslee, Brian Baird; West Virginia – Nick Rahall; Wisconsin – Tammy Baldwin, Own Moore

The Haitians rightfully deserve our pity and help. The Gazans rightfully do not.
