Vail Daily letter: No laughing matter
Vail, CO Colorado
As a longtime local and moth-er of two teenagers, I am some-what embarrassed and disgust-ed at your April Fools’ story alluding to underage drinking. If you were more sensitive or aware of the issue of alcohol and substance abuse among teens in our community, I believe you would refrain from publishing this type of media commentary. Teen drinking is not a laugh-ing matter, nor is it appropriate subject matter for April Fools’ jokes. Our children already have quite enough negative influence and peer pressure to contend with on this subject. We certain-ly don’t need the local media depicting teen drinking as a laughing matter or as an addi-tional influence or persuasion.
I suggest you instead give more press to the efforts of our local organizations and schools that support our children in making healthy decisions regarding teen drinking. Despite the fact that this is a widespread problem in our community, there are many kids who are trying to stay drug and alcohol free. Your article not only ridicules the efforts of these children but literally offers incentives and support for underage drinking. Not funny!
