Vail Daily letter: Only in America

Only in America could politicians talk about the greed of the rich at a $35,000 a plate fund raiser in Beverly Hills.

Only in America could we have the two people most responsible for our tax code, “Turbo Tax” Timothy Geithner, the head of the Treasury Department, and Charlie Rangle, who once ran the Ways and Means Committee, both turn out to be tax cheats, and who are calling for higher taxes.

Only in America can Islamic extremists kill our citizens in the name of Allah, and our leaders and media are more concerned with the possible backlash to Muslims.

Only in America could the government demand investigations into price gouging by oil companies, when the return on investments of a major oil company (Marathon) is half of that of company that makes tennis shoes in sweatshops in China (Nike).

Only in America can you be required to show a government-issued identification to purchase liquor, board a plane, or cash a check, but you need nothing to vote for the world’s most powerful government leaders.

Only in America could people that believe that balancing the budget and following the Constitution be labeled as extremists.

Only in America could the government that collects more in taxes than any nation in recorded history, and still spends a trillion dollars more than it takes in every year for a total of $7 million a minute, still complain it needs more money.

Only in America could the top 10 percent of wage earners, who pay more than 86 percent of all income tax, be accused of not paying their “fair share” by people who pay no income tax at all!

What a country!
